Dipping through the morning haze, the broad Luangwa River slowly comes into view from the backseat of my micro light. My pilot John drops our little open plane a little lower, and more patterns and textures emerge. We follow the meandering river across a wide-open floodplain, dotted with sparkling oxbow lakes, emerald lagoons and seemingly endless mopane forest that extend all the way until the distant horizon.

From up in the air the land assumes a timeless quality. Below us eagles soar and a herd of buffalo marches through the wetlands. For a brief moment I close my eyes to feel the warm summer breeze touching my face. But when opening them, in the corner of my eye, I see a herd of about twenty elephants crossing the shimmering water. They are half-submerged, using their trunks like snorkels while moving away from one of the many emerald islands where succulent grasses grow on fertile soils. John quickly spins the micro light and I manage to get a few images before they disappear in the distance, walking away from the river. Where they are heading to, nobody will ever know…

What people say about my prints

★★★★★

We have been following Pie’s work for more than 5 years now. Therefore, having one of his Umoja prints decorating our home, is not only an incredible honour, but also a testament to our support for his mission as an artist and conservationist. His work is now a beautiful daily reminder of our own memories made in Africa on various trips to Kenya as well as Zambia.

★★★★★

It’s been such a rewarding process to pick & choose the artworks as well as the materials for our two framed Umoja prints. Pie carefully guided us through the entire process and even invited us in his studio in Amsterdam to see some of the samples in person. His approach to making art as well as his commitment to protecting nature, is tangible in every step of the way.
