As a photographer, I have a love/hate relationship with mid-day light, especially in combination with blue skies. After a long and sunny morning in the Mara Triangle, we, therefore, decided to head back to the lodge to have breakfast. When driving the ridgeline, overlooking the beautiful mara landscape I suddenly noticed movement in the corner of my eye and I asked our driver to stop. In fact, I needed binoculars to see if I was right, it could have easily been a rock. And there she was, a female elephant with huge tusks crossing the savanna in search of shade or water. Our guide instantly told us it’s a very unusual sight to witness an elephant cross this open landscape in the middle of the day and we decided to wait. When scanning her line of path, I suddenly found a bunch of acacia trees on the far left and all I could do was crossing my fingers and toes that she would move in that direction. But she decided to stop and graze for a while, in the mid-day heat. After making us patiently wait for another 45 minutes she started to move again and then the waiting paid off. She walked right into the frame and the image I envisioned happened right in front of me.
