On our way back to camp the horizon slowly begins to glow a buttery yellow when we suddenly bump into a herd of elephants throwing cascades of dirt, creating an artificial haze of dust that muddles the skyline and silhouettes their wriggling trunks. South Luangwa is particularly known for this magical light, where the rising and setting sun penetrate the thick dust kicked up by the hooves of buffalo’s and the feet of elephants. We pause and watch the whole scene unfold in silence, because isn’t it mind blowing that, in a constantly changing world, these rhythms and rituals have been occurring here for millennia, irrespective and unaware of human history. This image is a tribute to that.
