One of the things that impresses me most on the African savanna, is the emergence of new life. In between all the chaos that is the circle of existence, new-borns always make me stop and breathe for a moment, reflect on how precious life really is, in every possible shape or form.

Amongst my favourite in that sense, is for sure the giraffe. With an ability to grow from infancy to adulthood in under an hour, a baby giraffe can literally walk within 30 minutes of its birth. By the time 3 full hours have passed, that same foal will already start running, isn’t that truly remarkable? However, even with such an accelerated childhood, the foals still face a 50% mortality rate. Those that survive have a lifetime of being focused and alert ahead of them. Therefore, in celebration of new life, this image is a tribute to new beginnings!

What people say about my prints

We have been following Pie’s work for more than 5 years now. Therefore, having one of his Umoja prints decorating our home, is not only an incredible honour, but also a testament to our support for his mission as an artist and conservationist. His work is now a beautiful daily reminder of our own memories made in Africa on various trips to Kenya as well as Zambia.

It’s been such a rewarding process to pick & choose the artworks as well as the materials for our two framed Umoja prints. Pie carefully guided us through the entire process and even invited us in his studio in Amsterdam to see some of the samples in person. His approach to making art as well as his commitment to protecting nature, is tangible in every step of the way.
